Competition terms and conditions

The competition takes place every year in late April-early May. The age of performers’ eligibility depends on whether the competition year is even or odd. Every odd year, children’s competition takes place.

April – May, 2023:

Piano ensembles of students of music schools and arts schools for children;
Piano ensembles – “Teacher and student”;
Piano ensembles of teachers at institutions of music education.

Every even year, adult’s competition takes place.

April – May, 2024:

Piano ensembles of students of music schools and arts schools for children;
Piano ensembles of students of undergraduate and graduate students majoring in music and music pedagogy;
Piano ensembles – “Teacher and student”;
Piano ensembles of teachers at institutions of music education;
Concert performers.

COMPETITION GOALS

A.G. BAKHCHIEV Open All-Russian Competition of Piano Duos “Two at the Piano” contributes to the development of creative work of performers and composers; refinement of professional skills of talented musicians; preservation and development of the traditions of duo performance; dissemination of classical Russian, Western and modern music for piano ensemble.

THE ORDER OF THE COMPETITION

Form of participation – full-time, part-time (by video recordings);
Correspondence competition is provided for nonresident participants;
The winners’ gala concert will be formed from the best Competition performances. It will be posted on the Competition website.
Diplomas will be sent to the Competition participants via e-mail within a month after the results are announced.

 

CONDITIONS OF THE COMPETITION

PARTICIPANTS
Competition is open to piano ensembles for three, four, six, and eight hands piano.

Category I

Students of children music school.

Age groups for Category I:
• Younger – up to 10 years old.
• Middle –11 to 13 years old.
• Older – 14 to 17 years old.

Category II – “Teacher-student”

Students of music schools for children and teachers – representatives of any schools of music irrespective of age.

Category III

Teachers of music schools – representatives of any schools of music irrespective of age.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Category I Program of free choice (2-4 works).

Category II — «Teacher-student» Program of free choice (2-4 works).

Category III Program of free choice (2-4 works) up to 20 minutes duration.

Participants’ programs can include original works, as well as published arrangements of music for piano ensemble.
• Participants’ programs should include works of classical or romantic periods.
• Performance of only published compositions is allowed.
• It is not allowed to perform either arrangements of concertos for piano and orchestra, or two-piano arrangements of works originally written for piano four hands.
• Arrangements of jazz and popular pieces are not allowed.
• The jury encourages performance of original works for piano ensemble.
• Performance is allowed both by heart and with sheet music.

 

JURY OF THE COMPETITION

For the evaluation of participants of the competition, the organizational committee forms a jury comprising respected musicians – teachers and performers.

Jury president – Merited artist of Russia, Doctor of Arts, President of the National Association of Piano Duets, Professor Elena Gennadyevna SOROKINA.

The jury has the right to:
· split awards between participants of the competition within the limits of the award fund;
· award special prizes;
· award diplomas for the best performance of specific compositions;
· withhold some awards;
· stop competition performers if they exceed the established time limit.

Decisions of the jury are final and cannot be appealed.

 

COMPETITION AWARDS

Winners in every performance category are awarded Diplomas of I, II, and III degree and the title “Laureat of the All-Russian Open Competition”; Diploma of IV degree and the title “Diploma holder of the All-Russian Open Competition.”  Teachers of laureates and of diploma-holders are awarded a diploma.

Organizational committee establishes special diplomas and awards for the performance of particular pieces, as well as participation diplomas.

The jury reserves the right to identify the winner of the competition who is awarded a Grand-prix (with the respective diploma)

To participate in the competition, the following documents are required:

•   application (the form is attached);
•   photograph (for a duo – a joint photograph), in electronic format, with the last names provided;
•   for students participating in Categories I, II – copy of student or graduate student ID;
•   for teachers participating in Categories II and III – letter from the employer confirming the employment status;
•   a copy of the registration fee payment document.
